The November 2, 2015, BNA Daily Environment Report article, “New Authority Not Expected for Biotech Framework Update,” included comments made by Richard E. Engler, Ph.D. at the “Modernizing the Regulatory System for Biotechnology Products” public meeting held by FDA, USDA, and EPA.    

[…DuPont global director of corporate regulatory affairs Terry] Medley and Richard Engler, a senior chemist working for Bergeson & Campbell P.C., said the update needs to provide public confidence in the regulatory oversight process, so that the public can have confidence in the products of biotechnology.

Medley, who was the APHIS administrator from 1996 to 1998, and Engler, who worked in EPA’s chemicals office for 17 years and led the agency’s Green Chemistry Program, told Bloomberg BNA they expect the changes this administration will make to the regulatory approach for biotechnology will last beyond the current administration.

The agency staff who spoke at and attended the meeting are senior agency scientists who will continue to work with biotechnology regardless of which administration comes next, they said.

Having agency scientists develop the updated approach means key questions will be asked by individuals with the expertise to find answers, Engler said. […]
