Overview:

Cosmetic formulations often contain preservatives to protect the product’s integrity and extend its shelf life. The regulatory requirements that product manufacturers must adhere to when incorporating preservatives into their products and what claims are permissible on their product labels is far from harmonized globally, and the path is not getting easier. This webinar will provide an overview of cosmetic ingredient regulations in the U.S., the European Union (EU), Canada, and China, focusing on how preservatives are regulated in cosmetic formulations. A special focus will be on cosmetic claims specific to preservatives and how certain claims impact the product’s regulatory jurisdiction. The webinar will also address how the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates preservatives under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA) that are directly added to food, those used in “active” packaging applications, and those used in food contact materials; and which claims made by cosmetic manufacturers that could be subject to regulation by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).

Topics Covered:

  • Cosmetic preservative legislation in the U.S., EU, Canada, and China;

  • Cosmetic claims — do’s and don’ts;
